White Copper Composition
White Copper Composition
White copper is a distinctive copper-based alloy primarily composed of nickel, giving it a lustrous silver-white appearance. This unique blend allows copper and nickel to form a continuous solid solution, regardless of their proportions. When nickel content exceeds 16%, the alloy takes on a silver-white hue, becoming increasingly whiter as the nickel concentration rises. Typically, white copper comprises about 25% nickel, lending it its characteristic sheen and name.
Application
The introduction of nickel into pure copper significantly enhances its attributes, including strength, corrosion resistance, hardness, electrical resistance, and thermoelectric properties, while reducing the temperature coefficient of resistivity. Consequently, white copper boasts superior mechanical and physical properties compared to other copper alloys. It offers excellent ductility, high hardness, appealing aesthetics, and robust corrosion resistance, making it ideal for extensive use in shipbuilding, petrochemical industries, electrical appliances, instruments, medical equipment, daily essentials, and artisanal crafts. Additionally, it plays a crucial role as a resistance and thermocouple alloy. However, it's worth noting that nickel, the primary additive, is a scarce and costly strategic material.
