Magnesium is a silver-white light metal that looks very similar to aluminum, but is harder and lighter than aluminum. The density of magnesium metal (1.74 g/cm 3) is only two-thirds that of aluminum (2.7 g/cm 3). Magnesium and aluminum, in the air surface can also be rapidly oxidized and tarnished, generating a dense oxide film, so that the metal inside no longer continue to be oxidized.
Magnesium metal can produce dazzling light when burned in the air, so it is known as the "flash metal" and is often used to make glitter, flares and fireworks.

Product Use
The main use of the metal magnesium is to make alloys. For example, the ordinary aluminum alloy is 1% to 15% magnesium alloy, it is hard, light, smooth surface, often used in the production of door and window frames and various daily necessities. Aluminum magnesium alloy containing 5% to 30% magnesium is an ideal metal material for manufacturing automobiles and aircraft, so some people call magnesium "defense metal". Titanium magnesium alloys were used in the manufacture of the Luna 24 space probe. It was the first to visit the "Moon Palace", and experienced the test of the sharp temperature difference of 110°C during the day and 120°C at night. Therefore, titanium magnesium alloy is known as "cosmic alloy". Adding a small amount of metal magnesium (0.05%) to the cast iron can make the carbon in the cast iron become spherical, greatly enhancing its ductility and crack resistance, so it is called "ductile iron".
Magnesium oxide (MgO) generated after the combustion of magnesium metal is an excellent refractory material, with a melting point of up to 2852°C, so the firebrick made of it (also known as magnesium brick) to the blast furnace can withstand high temperatures above 2000°C.
