Description: Gadolinium, symbolized as Gd, with an atomic number of 64 and an atomic weight of 157.25, is a lustrous, malleable, silvery-white metal. It boasts a melting point of 1313°C, a boiling point of 3273°C, and a density of 7.901g/m3. Remarkably, gadolinium exhibits magnetic properties at room temperature. While it remains stable in dry air, it tarnishes in humid conditions. Notably, gadolinium has the highest thermal neutron capture cross-section. Though its presence in the earth's crust is a mere 0.000636%, it is primarily found in minerals like monazite and bastnasite. Through the process of magnetized refrigeration using gadolinium salts, ultra-low temperatures nearing absolute zero can be achieved.
Application:Gadolinium has a broad spectrum of applications across medical, industrial, and nuclear energy domains. It is predominantly used as a neutron-absorbing material in atomic reactors. Additionally, it finds utility in microwave technology and as a phosphor in color television screens. Gadolinium oxide, when combined with lanthanum, enhances the vitrified area and thermal stability of glass. Moreover, gadolinium oxide is vital in the fabrication of capacitors and X-ray intensifying screens. The gadolinium gallium garnet serves as an excellent single substrate for magnetic bubble memory devices.
